AI2GO: Sustainable AI for sustainable companies – 30 March, online
Sustainable AI for sustainable companies – best practices from Piedmont/Italy and North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany
Piemonte Innova and KI.NRW have joined forces for this AI2GO session to exchange experiences and strengthen European AI cooperation.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly contribute to making companies more sustainable by improving efficiency, reducing waste, and identifying areas for improvement.
AI can help companies make data-driven decisions that promote sustainability, reduce waste, and improve efficiency, which can have significant financial and environmental benefits.
For example, AI can optimize energy usage and reduce waste by analyzing data from sensors and other sources to identify energy-saving opportunities, AI can assist in developing sustainable products by analyzing data on consumer behavior and preferences, environmental impact, and resource usage, AI can assist in developing sustainable products by analyzing data on consumer behavior and preferences, environmental impact, and resource usage and much more.
At the same time, AI applications elsewhere can themselves be very energy-intensive, for example when it comes to training large language models. However, it is possible to develop AI systems that can learn efficiently with less data – artificial intelligence that does not require energy-intensive data centres, but meets the requirements of resource and data economy.

Inspiration AI: Identify opportunities, start smart
Dr Christian Temath, Managing Director KI.NRW
AI is here to stay and inspires us every day. Artificial intelligence can help make processes more efficient and save energy on a large scale. But how can companies, especially SMEs, start their AI journey and become successful AI adopters? In his introductory talk, Christian will present practical AI use cases for more resource efficiency and sustainability from different industries and business areas, and give practical tips on how to get started smartly.
Dr Christian Temath has been managing director of the competence platform KI.NRW since September 2020. KI.NRW is the central contact point for artificial intelligence in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the Fraunhofer IAIS in Sankt Augustin, he and his team are working on establishing the „AI made in NRW“ brand and strengthening the technological sovereignty of North Rhine-Westphalia. A PhD in Business Informatics, he has many years of experience in management consulting in the field of technology as well as in the practical application of AI technologies at an international e-commerce company.
Towards Energy-Efficient Model Application
Dr Sebastian Buschjäger, Lamarr Institute & TU Dortmund University
Data scientists often train multiple models over and over again to find the best hyperparameter combination for the best possible performance. However, once this initial exploration phase is complete, the continuous application of the trained model across different users and/or devices often requires much more energy than its initial training. In this talk, we will discuss how to make ML models more resource efficient once they have been trained.
Sebastian Buschjäger is a postdoctoral researcher and coordinator of Resource-Aware Machine Learning at the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Dortmund since 2023. Previously, he was a PhD student at the Artificial Intelligence Unit of the TU Dortmund University in Germany, where he received his Dr. rer. nat. degree with distinction in 2022. His research focuses on machine learning methods combined with small devices and specialised hardware.

How AI makes energy operation in buildings more sustainable
Marc Grömminger, Senior Account Executive, DABBEL AI
In this presentation, we will discuss how Artificial Intelligence can be used to improve buildings’ energy efficiency. By monitoring and evaluating over 20,000 variables per month, AI-based solutions can be proactive in recognizing and resolving issues, leading to more efficient energy use and lower operating costs. Marc will also provide best practice examples from existing projects.
Marc Grömminger brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as Senior Account Executive at DABBEL. He has a Master’s degree in Business and Management and 7 years of work experience in various customer-oriented roles. His passion for sustainability has enabled him to work closely with well-known international clients to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their sustainability efforts. Marc is an excellent communicator and has successfully represented DABBEL at various industry events.
Enerbrain and machine learning logics for more sustainable cities
Marco Martellacci, Chief Scientist, Enerbrain
Enerbrain provides energy efficiency solutions for buildings using AI and IoT. They’ve recently invested in Model Predictive Control and Reinforcement Learning algorithms to optimize energy consumption and enable regulation within Energy Communities. By combining these control methods with their existing tech, Enerbrain can develop more intelligent energy management solutions. Their investment aligns with their vision of creating sustainable and efficient energy systems at the community level, reducing energy waste and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.
Marco Martellacci is one of Enterbrain Co-founders, a company founded in 2015 with the goal of fighting climate change through innovative technologies that enable large non-residential buildings to reduce energy consumption and improve indoor comfort. As Chief Innovation Officer he is involved in defining the product of tomorrow, which allows Enerbrain to constantly stay ahead of the curve. With a background in applied scientific research and a degree in Cybernetic Physics, can be considered an expert in innovation, having created 5 patents for proprietary Enerbrain algorithms
